Where is insurance language heading?

Abstract

This paper addresses a topic that has not been frequently examined either domestically or internationally, namely the language used in the field of insurance. The introductory section outlines the starting points concerning language as a means of communication among people, with a focus on the language of insurance. It then turns its attention to established loanwords that have been commonly used for many years and without which professional communication in insurance would simply be impossible. These will undoubtedly continue to be used. A particular part of the research conducted in this paper, to which, for good reason, the greatest amount of space has been devoted, concerns foreign words that are by no means necessary, since suitable domestic equivalents are available. Such foreign terms, almost entirely, originate from the English language. The penultimate section deals with expressions that are widely accepted, even though they are linguistically incorrect. It would by no means be an easy task to eradicate them and replace them with correct terms, but the effort is worthwhile. The paper concludes with a summary and proposals for steps that should be taken in order to preserve the Serbian language in the field of insurance and to avoid the use of unnecessary, artificially constructed words. https://erevija.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/N.-Zarkovic_Kuda-ide-jezik-osiguranja.pdf
